Stuck on You Too
When developing imagined scenes for my larger watercolor paintings, preliminary work includes scientific research, model building, and tonal studies. This particular pencil study took on a life of its own. I had a wonderful piece of handmade paper reminiscent of an aged map. I found myself getting lost in the textures and patterns of the octopuses, and wanting to make them feel as if they were part of the paper. The Sea of Cortez is home to an incredible array of octopuses. Species depicted, clockwise starting lower left: Octopus chierchiae, Octopus penicillifer, Octopus fitchi, Paroctopus digueti, Octopus bimaculatus, and Octopus veligero.
