“Hearing the word ‘spider’ usually elicits some form of recoil. Hearing about being in the wilderness at night may have the same effect. Yet, there is a whole side of the natural world that is only visible after darkness sets in. This painting is part of a series about my experiences during night walks through the wilds of Madagascar, one of the world’s biodiversity hotspots. In this case, I was exploring a cave, where the only light source was my headlamp. I generally encourage people to stop and look at the beauty of nature. In the dark, it takes extra effort not to miss anything and while we’re busy looking at one thing, I often wonder how many eyes are watching us. In this case, I know at least these eight were!”
