I never thought my first elk painting would be a yearling, as us artists generally tend toward the dramatic: big majestic bull elk, antlers shining in the setting sun, bugling on a crisp fall day, that sort of thing. Fortunately or unfortunately, I instead found myself enthralled by the sleek elegance of this yearling when I met her up close and personal near Mammoth Hot Springs in Yellowstone. Such beautiful athletic lines and vigor, yet a feminine vulnerability illustrated by the quickness in her eyes and the orangish-pink light illuminating the thin skin of her ears.
This painting is one of a few western wildlife paintings I did that is a bit different than my other work, as I was experimenting a little with style, lighting and my palette.
