The spotted hyena is the most successful large carnivore in Africa. They are highly adaptable and opportunistic, capable of hunting a wide variety of prey animals and will scavenge when the opportunity arises. They hunt alone, in small groups or in large packs. Though they work in an organized pack while hunting, the social structure of the spotted hyena is competitive rather than cooperative. Once the prey is brought down, access to the food is dependent on their ability to dominate others. This hyena glances back at fellow clan members while running off with a wildebeest leg.
