Swift Parrots crossing the Derwent Estuary
My painting is a view across the Derwent River mouth in Southern Tasmania, Australia known as the Derwent Estuary. I painted the estuary in winter 2018, I wished to depict the season with a rainbow. Then to emphasis the character of the immediate environmnet I included the swift parrots migratory flight which in real life brings them to breed in the threatened native forests of Tasmania. The parrots cross Bass Strait, 300 kilometres of wild open water which seperates Tasmania from the mainland Australia. The parrots take this journey annually breeding in the tall eucalypt forests and returning to the mainland at the end of each summer.
