Leading into my last week in the park, I encountered some rainy weather.  I was either trapped in my room, attempting to spend my sentence creating art and hoping the weather changes for the better.  I managed to get in a few short hikes at a time figuring is I only went between 2 - 4 miles at a time and got caught in the rain, it wouldn't be too difficult to get back to my car.  I drove north to the Dickey Visitor's Center and stopped at Elkwollow for a sandwich.  There was considerable road construction on that particular stretch of Skyline Drive.  My...

Friday, August 17 - After hiking such a big hike the day before, I planned on doing several shorter hikes today.  Among the hikes was a rock scramble on the Bearfence Mountain Loop.  A loop just over a mile with a section of climbing over and through rocks as part of the trail.  I know three adventurous granddaughters that would have loved climbing those rocks - I now know where to take them someday!  I then pulled into Hazeltop Ridge Overlook and started down the trail into the woods to Powell Mountain.  I planned on just going to the summit and back which would have...

Thursday, August 16 - I packed for a long day of hiking the Cedar Run Trail Loop.  This trail decents into the Cedar Run Canyon along a series of cascading waters and quiet pools.  I had pondered bringing my fly rod but decided that I did not want to carry anything more than I had to, also wanting my hands free.  I regretted that decision as all along the way I saw deep, cool, quiet pools where I believed lurked a trophy trout.....het a person can dream.  It is better that I did not bring my rod as I probably would still be on the trail checking out the quiet waters....

Wednesday, August 15 - I packed up gear for the day and headed off to the Fischer Gap parking area.  Crossing Skyline Drive I walked down the Rose River Fire Road to the base of the Dark Hollow Falls area.  I then went down the Rose River Trail in search of quiet pools of cold water where I felt a trout may be lurking.  Not becessarily trout season, I was still set to trout fish in Virginia.  I donned my 'sexy boots' that I got from my son Matthew for Mother's Day - he always seems to know what I would like and what I would use.  With leggings covering...

Sunday, August 12, gave me a rainy day.  I used the time to go to town and do laundry, toured the local Luray Zoo, and do some sketching.Monday, August 13 - I was back out on the trails.  I hiked the Lewis Springs Loop which was 3 miles.  It was amazing to hear water rushing underground in some places as I walked the trail.  To my delight I ran into Tom, a gentle, older man, walking the trail, and we ended up doing the hike together.  It was refreshing to have some one to chat with.  We were unable to find the path (which is not recommended due to hazards and...

Saturday, August 11 - I initially went to the Meadow Springs parking area.  A favorite spot to park to hike Mary's Rock, which I had already done, but I thought I would attempt Buck's Hollow/Buck Ridge.  In the parking lot a met an experienced man/hiker with his lady friend, who was fairly new to hiking.  He said the since 2012 he has lived in a one man tent and I certainly could not do the same as I love being outdoors and taking adventures but I do also like the conveniences of modern life as well.  After the prior day of turning off of a trail due to a huge bear...

Friday, August 10 - I did my first workshop today with a fantastic small group of young adults.  This crew worked and learned within the park for the past four weeks.  We painted for a few hours before the crew departed for pizza and a closing ceremony of their time in the park.  I really enjoyed my time with these young adults and thought with our youth taking their time to educate themselves and care for our natural resoures we are in good hands.I decide to hike in the afternoon after making attempts to purchase a fishing license in the park.  I held off on the license...

Wednesday, August 8 - Continued....My hikes for the day took me almost 10 miles.  I hiked to the Pinnacles and met a man at the top who suggested I hike onto Mary's Rock - it was only 2 more miles.  The man felt the trail was fairly level and an easy hike.  Once I got going I knew I could turn around at any point and head home, but alas, I am not wired that way and I had to see it to the end.  On this day I encountered 4 bear along the trail.  One with a cub and the other two single grown bear.  I got to thinking that I may have only seen 4 bear, but I wonder...
