Across Montana the Hairy Woodpecker can be found at a variety of elevations. Although the population is stable in the Northern states, the Hairy Woodpecker numbers seem to be decreasing in some areas of the south. The Hairy Woodpecker is a very beneficial bird in the forests of Montana by consuming many harmful insects, such as wood-boring beetles.
