"Checking out the Competition"
"Checking out the Competition" was awarded 1st place in the Sculpture Division of the Indiana Wildlife Artists 2010 annual competition.
Originally carved from tupelo as a decorative wood carving, it was carved in the decorative decoy style. The physical differences of the red-breasted merganser - with its thin serrated bill and shaggy crested head made this a fun bird to carve.
Unlike typical "puddle ducks" (such as mallards), who feed bottom-up in shallow waters, the red-breasted merganser is one of the diving ducks. Using their teeth-like serrations on their bills to capture their slippery prey, they pursue fish underwater with great speed and agility.
