The Night Stalker
On a spring foray in the Everglades, I came upon a beautiful sight - a Black-crowned Night Heron hunting during the day! As their name implies, night herons are nocturnal, hunting from dusk to dawn. They prefer to spend their days sitting hunched and motionless in a tree, avoiding the competition with the other herons and egrets. However, during nesting season, when the demand for food is high, they can often be found foraging in the daylight hours. As with all herons, patience is the name of the game! Watching this bird in action was both a surprise and a delight!
