Seward Peninsula, Alaska
IN the 1990s, I was researching the migration of western sandpipers. I had visitied their winter quarters in Central America and Mexico in the winter of 1993, watched them migrate through the Fraser River delta near Vancouver in spring, and dashed north to the Seward Peninsula in western Alaska to witness their arrival. We established a field camp on Norton Sound and drove to Wooleys Lagoon in search of early arrivals. Just before a storm broke, I quickly painted this scene.
