Our family has a cabin bordering Rocky Mountain National Park in the Kawuneeche Valley. The valley teems with wildlife and becomes particularly magical in the fall, when the bull elk begin their eerily melodic bugling, which often lasts well into the middle of the night. Like the loons on northern lakes, certain sounds have an emotionally calming effect. An artist friend upon seeing the painting said "you have painted the sound!" I'm not so sure I succeeded in that, but that was certainly the intention.
