Patterns of Africa
My love of wildlife is the greatest inspiration for my work as an artist. I aim to represent the natural world in all its beauty, danger and drama. I have often travelled to Africa to sketch and paint and was able to study this Rhino while on safari in South Africa. I wanted to capture the monolithic feel of the rhino and contrast this with the patterns and vibrancy of the artwork and colours created by the indigenous people. In the wild rhinos look so powerful and invincible – it is devastating to think that such a permanent part of the African landscape should be so vulnerable to poaching, and so perilously close to extinction in many areas.
