Quokkas are a small type of marsupial that belongs to the kangaroo and wallaby family. Under the conservation satus they are listed as "vulnerable" and there are only a few left on mainland Western Australia. The remaining species are found on Rottnest Island and other small islands off Perth, Western Australia.
Quokkas are renowned for being one of the cutest animals on earth and are a great tourist attraction for visitors to Rottnest Island. They look "happy" due what looks as though they are smiling but this is how they shape their mouths to keep cool. Quokas sleep in shady areas during the day and are most active at night.
I was lucky enough to see this little one come out during the day while visiting Australia Wildlife Park, NSW. Original in private collection.
