Artist Statement:
The Peruvian tern (Sternula lorata) is a member of the family Laridae. Found in northern Chile, Equador and Peru, its natural habitats are hot deserts, sandy shores and coastal saline lagoons. Their numbers are declining due to habitat loss. The population is estimated to be between 1000-2400 individuals. Using references I had taken of other tern species and cross referencing the specifics of the Peruvian tern, I depicted this species as it landed, a moment of rest while unknowingly fighting for survival.
