This piece was created in response to concerns about locked gates, ending caretaker programs, and ongoing urban expansion of roads and houses surrounding B.C. parks, including a unique small nature conservancy next to my home in Kelowna. This painting is about life cycles, connections, and fence borders that cannot truly separate nature from urbanization. Woodhaven Park opens to the hills and trails at the back, but with tall chain-link fences on three sides. Regardless of gates and boundaries intended to protect delicate ecosystems, urbanization does still continue to encroach upon the park. However the benefits from nature also overflow back in the other direction, across the fence and into our community. This painting is a response to the beauty of this wild place, memories of what was once there, and hopeful signs of resilience still present. It is a celebration of energy and potential.
