Wall color:
White-tail deer often wander into my yard after acorns, sunflower seeds from my bird feeder or tender growth of plants that I forgot to protect. Their casual comfort in my yard provides a lot of photo opportunities since, even when they see me, they usually just go on nibbling. In this painting I have taken advantage of exceptionally dramatic lighting that has bleached the color from the backs of the two deer I decided to paint. (There were several more in the yard at the time.)
White-tail deer had been hunted nearly to extinction in the state of Alabama by the end of the Civil War, but in the 1930’s Alabama began restocking programs that grew through the 50’s and 60’s resulting in the current abundance of deer throughout the state.
