This painting celebrates the joy of Cabo Pulmo, BCS, Mexico. I witnessed all of these plants and animals on my research trips to this amazing land, and enjoy the combination of the delicate with the feisty - the Giant Orange Sulphur Butterflies, touching on the theme of visitors and migration, elephant trees with their knobbly texture and their abundance in Cabo Pulmo, and the Loggerhead Shrike, because I have always had a thing for cute and vicious critters. The fact that this bird would like to impale these gorgeous butterflies on sharp branches is not lost on me, and could be his personal reason for rejoicing. I also wanted to touch on some of the colors you can encounter when exploring on land. I am a lucky traveler, just as the butterflies are.
