While learning to fish for trout, I actually did see a bird fly out of the water just in front of me. It showed very little concern for my being there and it took a while before I believed it myself. It continued with the added signature, rapid deep knee bends, right at the water's edge for some extra entertainment. Chubby, and just gray, the American Dipper is North America's only truly aquatic songbird. Diving into and flying out of the river, it even walks on the bottom to catch lunch. The antics are as much fun to discover as any flashy feathers.
