Australian pelicans live in coastal areas of Australia and this perfect pair can be found chilling out on a sandbar , outside the front of my gallery and studio in Ballina , Northern New South Wales. On rare occasions when monsoonal rains flood the salt lakes in arid, inland Australia , more than 3000 km away , pelicans will flock in the thousands to breed and when the lakes dry out they return. Australian pelicans are protected species and as a result are not considered to be threatened.
