Once hunted to near extinction for their pelts, the Southern Sea Otter has made a comeback. I am fortunate to live near the Monterey Bay where we can watch the antics of these remarkable animals. The mothers often pull their babies onto their stomachs as they cruise around, grooming them and leaving them in eel grass while foraging and bringing them food. With over a million hairs per square inch, grooming is essential. They trap air in their fur to keep warm as they have no blubber as other marine mammals like whales and dolphins do.
