Wall color:
This is the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.
I love to paint this canyon. The subtle variations of color on the rocks surrenders to distance. The remaining color, blue, fades into pure light.
Sometimes the act of painting is like a meditation. I was a stillness in a moving landscape. Birds, rabbits, a coyote, wind, clouds and sun all in motion.
I painted in the raven to symbolize them all. Warm living creatures graceful in an ever changing landscape.
As I paint, I'm aware of the beauty but also the fragility of this and other national parks. These last unspoiled places seem to be falling prey to industry, one after another.
We are the only living creatures that can preserve and restore the natural world.
