The wild animals enchanted me during my vacation in Kenya and Tanzania many years ago, and since then stayed with me. I am sure that we humans are connected to all the varieties of life on our planet and we need to share its resources and protect them. My paintings and poems deal with the impact of human society on our fragile ecosystem, biodiversity and social injustice. My paintings are mostly depictions of animals and birds in their natural habitat, with particular emphasis on the African big five whose members are targets of trophy hunting and poaching for ivory, a sort of Viagra for some people. The thorny relationship between the oppressor (man) and oppressed is brought out in the painting technique. My painting "Elephantnil" vibrates opposing tensions between the transparent aquarelle strokes and the opaque intensity and streaming acrylic paint that 'cages' the big mammal. The number of elephants in the planet has decreased unbelievably in recent years, and they are not an exception. Our scientists call it the sixth extinction after the dinosaurs. The late Dr. Leaky is one of the people I admire; he fought (with guns) for the survival of the elephants. I dedicate this painting to his memory. 2058 AD Elephants. Fairy tales.
