If you have hiked a trail bordering a marsh, you will no doubt encounter a wading bird foraging in the shallows. The spoonbill will shuffle through, dislodging prey from the bottom, and filtering it out through its bill. The wood stork also stirs up the bottom to seize their prey. The “Little Blue” when shuffling the shallows, extends its wings, throwing a mantle over the water and shielding it from the intense glare of the sun. All its sun-lit, vibrant plumage is on full display while it searches for small top minnows and other prey.
