Several years ago I discovered this quintessential island during an autumn kayaking trip to Fraser Bay in Killarney Provincial Park, north of Georgian Bay. Its majestic windswept pines, symbolic of the area's regal old growth forests, could not have been more prefect. The islands stunning quartzite rock faces are typical of the La Cloche Mountains that run through the park. The white quartzite range was named La Cloche, meaning “bell” in French, because the rocks made a ringing sound when struck, which could be heard from a considerable distance. It is said that First Nations used the hills as warning bells for signaling.
