The original concept for this painting was to create a sense of quiet stillness and rest, both physically and emotionally. The next consideration was to then carefully select objects that would also express a relationship between nature and mankind. I settled on just two; a reference to the human condition in the statue, and a symbolic one derived from nature in the form of the dove. No other object was allowed to impose a presence, keeping the image stripped down to bare essentials. Every subsequent choice made during the painting process, such as posture, composition, colour, tone, etc. was made to serve the initial idea in a harmonious and cohesive manner.
